Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja branch, has told Nigerians that the ongoing strike will continue because the Federal Government is yet to call the union for discussion.<\/p>\n

The ASUU\u2019s branch chairman, Dr Kassim Umaru, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen at the end of its Congress, held at the University\u2019s Mini Campus in Gwagwalada on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Umaru also challenged the Federal Government to reference any of the things done to bring to an end the ongoing strike.<\/p>\n

According to him, Congress deliberated on issues around the strike and vehemently pronounced and rejected the offer presented by the Federal Government, adding that the National Executive Council (NEC) would meet at the end of the four weeks ultimatum to take its decision.<\/p>\n

Umaru said, \u201cAs far as we\u2019re concerned, the federal government hasn\u2019t done anything to our various demands.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe federal government should tell the Nigerian public what they\u2019ve done. The two committees that were set up, the Nimi Briggs committee, the Jubrin committee, were set up and these committees had their recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cOur salaries are always negotiated. It\u2019s not something you feel you can pay us. It\u2019s something that you have to sit down to talk and agree that you can pay us.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as we are concerned, our job is different from any other civil servants; it\u2019s the job you are going back to do. You\u2019re not paying for an hour. You\u2019re paying for the job we have done, so it\u2019s their responsibility to pay us and if they said they\u2019re not paying us, it is a joke taken too far.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs it\u2019s, they have not called our union and Nigerians should know that we\u2019ve not been called, no invitation to our union and all that we know is that the strike continues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recall that ASUU, on February 14, shut down public universities over the inability of the Federal Government to implement previous agreements both parties entered into.<\/p>\n

The lecturers\u2019 agitations include funding for the revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution, promotion arrears and others.<\/p>\n
