Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, alongside presidents of twenty-one other countries on Tuesday in Nairobi, attended the inauguration of William Ruto as the President of Kenya.<\/p>\n

The event, held at the Kasarani Stadium, is Kenya\u2019s fifth presidential inauguration.<\/p>\n

Ruto, 55, was declared the winner of the August 9 presidential election after defeating rival Raila Odinga.<\/p>\n

Ruto has served as Kenya\u2019s deputy president since 2013 when he was elected as outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta\u2019s running mate.<\/p>\n

In October 2014, he served as acting President when Kenyatta honoured the invitation to answer his criminal case at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Kenyatta\u2019s charges were later dropped.<\/p>\n

The event featured inspection of guards, swearing-in, military parades, transfer of sword, seal, Kenyan Constitution to the new president, musical renditions, and cultural display, among others.<\/p>\n

Presidents who attended the ceremony were those of Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Zimbabwe, Republic of Congo, Somalia, Seychelles, Mozambique, Malawi, Guinea Bissau, Chad, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Comoros, Zimbabwe, Eswantini, Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, and Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n

Other countries represented in official capacity include Iran, the UK, India, Qatar, Botswana, Morocco, Germany, Australia, Togo, Netherlands, The Gambia, France, Japan, Palestine, Egypt, China, and UAE, among others.<\/p>\n

The Chairperson of AU, representatives of the Commonwealth, and other regional and international bodies were also at the event.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Ruto applauded the Kenya Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for creditably acquitting itself under \u201cexceptionally challenging circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n
