Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has explained why it called off its eight-month strike.<\/p>\n

ASUU National President, Emmanuel Osodeke, said the eight months strike was called off following a court order and appeals from Nigerians.<\/p>\n

Osodeke disclosed this while appearing on Channels Television\u2019s Sunday Politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you have seen from our press release \u2013 although there were interventions by the Speaker (Gbajabiamila) and others \u2013 the major reason we are resuming is because we are obeying the industrial court\u2019s judgement. The issues have not been fully resolved and no agreements signed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are resuming because we are a law-abiding organisation and we don\u2019t want to break the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are also hoping that the intervention of the Speaker as promised by him will resolve this problem within a very short time. So, the issues have not been resolved but we would resume because of that court injunction.\u201d<\/p>\n

A court of appeal had ordered ASUU to return to class after the National Industrial Court ruled against the union.<\/p>\n

However, the ASUU National President also blamed the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, for the prolonged strike.<\/p>\n

Osodeke stressed that negotiation was the best way to resolve trade disputes involving academics.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut one of the ministers, the Minister of Labour, believes that the best way is to force them to class. But because of the interest of the Nigerian people \u2013 the students, their parents, and the Speaker who is intervening \u2013 our members will teach,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
