Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>As part of activities to mark this year\u2019s United Nations International Rural Women\u2019s Day, deputy Country Representative for UN Women in Nigeria, Lansana Wonneh, has disclosed that the world body has a programme that aims at giving more support to rural women farmers to enable them produce more.<\/p>\n

She disclosed this in Calabar on Thursday, at the celebration of the UN International Day of Rural Women.<\/p>\n

She identified issues of lack of infrastructure, lack of financial support, access to land and land ownership as factors that have hindered a lot of women, especially those in rural areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make sure that women realise their rights, are given adequate resources, and that they are able to produce more, more income and take better care of their families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wonneh said in getting to do more for the rural women, they will collaborate with the government to transform the situation.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the UN Day for International Rural Women\u2019, she explained that the annual celebration is important for two reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne reason is that we want to acknowledge the women in Nigeria who do the bulk of the work around food production, processing and marketing of food commodities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese women are not included in the process of decision making, have no participation in governance, they don\u2019t get resources from the government or the private sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on the topic \u2018The role of women in transforming agriculture\u2019, Prof. Caroline Aboh of the University of Calabar said, \u201cWomen should be encouraged to expand their farms, and given access to lucrative markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should be more educated. Women are the engine of the growth of every society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Commissioner for Agriculture, represented by Mr Nathaniel Nkor, called on women farmers to de-emphasise the use of chemicals and emphasise more organic fertilizers.<\/p>\n
