{"id":75002,"date":"2022-10-26T09:37:30","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T08:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/doctors-migrating-abroad-causing-manpower-crisis-nma"},"modified":"2022-10-26T11:11:52","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T10:11:52","slug":"doctors-migrating-abroad-causing-manpower-crisis-nma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/doctors-migrating-abroad-causing-manpower-crisis-nma","title":{"rendered":"Doctors migrating abroad causing manpower crisis \u2013 NMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has said the rate at which doctors are migrating for greaner pastures posed a serious manpower crisis in the health sector.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors raised the alarm at the opening ceremony of the NMA Anambra Chapter\u2019s Physicians\u2019 Week and Scientific Conference held in Nnewi.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that Dr Jide Onyekwelu, the Secretary-General of NMA, who delivered the lecture, said the burden of brain drain on the country was huge as it was expensive to train a medical doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Onyekwelu said while the UN standard recommended an average of one doctor to 500 patients, the ratio had dropped to about 1:5000 due to the declining number of doctors in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He called on the Nigerian government to find out what made practicing outside the country more attractive to Nigerian doctors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrain drain has devastated our medical sector.
