Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Residents of Irese, Aaye, and Ikota towns in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State who have been without electricity for more than six months vowed on Friday to shut down business activities at the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, in Akure, the state capital.<\/p>\n

The residents who decried the situation said the situation hampered economic progress in their communities.<\/p>\n

The affected areas have been in total darkness since February 2022, leading to lots of business owners, especially artisans whose livelihoods depend on power, relocating from the towns, with many shops and stores shut down as a result of the situation.<\/p>\n

In a protest letter addressed to the regional manager of BEDC, Akure, the furious residents also claimed that the power outage had created insecurity in the three communities.<\/p>\n

They further claimed that several attempts to persuade the electricity provider to take notice of their predicament had been futile.<\/p>\n

The letter, which was signed on behalf of the three communities by Oba Ahmed Destiny Saka, the Olurese of Ireseland, said that the residents had no alternative but to hold a mass protest to air their grievances before BEDC in Akure.<\/p>\n

According to the aggrieved communities: \u201cAfter exploiting all avenues of amity to bring sanity to our relationship by reinstalling electricity supply to our communities with no success in view, we have no choice but to organise a procession spanning protests to let the world know of the parlous state of electricity supply to our towns.\u201d<\/p>\n

When contacted, the spokesperson of the BEDC, Micheal Barnabas, blamed the blackout on the activities of vandals in the communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been working to restore power in the area and very soon, at least before Christmas, the residents will smile, they should just exercise some little patience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
