Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has ruled that Ecuador will feature at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.<\/p>\n

CAS on Tuesday, said Byron Castillo, the player who Chile claimed was ineligible to feature in the qualifiers, was deemed an Ecuadorean national.<\/p>\n

However, Ecuador will get a three-point deduction for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.<\/p>\n

They have also been fined 100,000 Swiss Francs ($101,605.36) for the \u201cuse of a document containing false information\u201d.<\/p>\n

The statement added that \u201csince the nationality of a player with a national association is determined by national laws (subject to time limits in case of a change of sporting nationality, which was not the case here), Byron Castillo was eligible to play … in the preliminary round of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n

CAS, which is sport\u2019s highest court, further explained that the decision was based on the fact that the Ecuadorean authorities confirmed Castillo as an Ecuadorean national.<\/p>\n

Ecuador will play in Group A alongside hosts Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal.<\/p>\n
