Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in charge of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Kwara State, Mallam Garba Attahiru Madami, has offered clarifications on the 23 staff of the commission allegedly caught in illegal voter registration.<\/p>\n

He said though the figure mentioned is correct, it represents the total number of staff in the country caught in the alleged malpractice.<\/p>\n

He made the clarification to correct what he termed a misunderstanding while delivering a speech last Wednesday when he held a stakeholder meeting on the forthcoming election.<\/p>\n

In a statement by the state\u2019s INEC Public Affairs and Protocol Officer, Abdulkadir Bolaji Ibrahim, the REC explained that none of Kwara INEC staff was among the culprits.<\/p>\n

According to him: \u201cThe figure represents the total number of staff across the country who were caught in irregular registration across the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the stakeholders\u2019 forum held earlier in the week, the Kwara INEC REC said that the forum became necessary as the first step to ensuring hitch-free elections next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cStakeholders must be aware that we are ready to protect the electoral process by conducting free, fair, transparent, peaceful and credible elections which will be acceptable to Kwarans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Madami also gave details of figures on the outcome of voters\u2019 registration and preparations for the election, stating, \u201cby facts made available, only 287, 393 new voters are eligible to vote in Kwara.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted that the figures add up the entire voting population in the state to 1.7 million.<\/p>\n
