Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said its officers have the power to search any building for any smuggled products.<\/p>\n

There have been controversies on whether or not customs officers have the right to storm any building in search of contrabands.<\/p>\n

Many have argued that operations of the NCS officials should be done at the border posts only instead of chasing smugglers into the busy roads.<\/p>\n

But, the Controller of Customs in Ogun 1 Area Command, Bamidele Makinde, made it known that the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) empowers the NCS to search premises, vehicles, planes, to arrest, detain and enforce the law like the police.<\/p>\n

Makinde told DAILY POST that the command had been conducting its anti-smuggling activities through surveillance, patrol duties and the deployment of personnel to man all the approved border stations.<\/p>\n

According to him, the seizures usually made by the command were made possible through adequate use of intelligence to aid operations.<\/p>\n

These, he said, were done in accordance with the sections of the Customs and Excise Management Act.<\/p>\n

Citing various sections of the Act, Makinde hinted that, \u201cSection 147 of CEMA Cap C45 Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, empowers Customs operatives to search premises suspected to have been used to conceal or store smuggled, prohibited, restricted or dutiable goods.\u201d<\/p>\n

He quoted Section 148 as one that empowers NCS officers to search licensed premises; Section 150 as the one that gives power to search persons; and Section 158 as the part that empowers officers of the NCS to patrol freely.<\/p>\n

Speaking further, the Controller cited Section 167 as giving power to detain and make seizure, adding that Section 149 gives power to search vehicles and aircrafts.<\/p>\n

He explained that Section 8 gives Customs Officers the same power as the Police with regards to enforcement duties.<\/p>\n

To wage war against smuggling in different parts of Ogun State, he disclosed that NCS operatives have been in the creeks, border lines, approved and unapproved routes to make seizures worth over four billion Naira in 2022.<\/p>\n

While appreciating \u201cthe continuous support\u201d of the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (rtd), his management team as well as officers and men, Makinde commended those he called critical stakeholders in the anti-smuggling struggle.<\/p>\n

They include the traditional rulers, community leaders, the press and other security agencies \u201cwho are showing concern and are collaborating with the service.\u201d<\/p>\n
