Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will have an uphill task postponing the 2023 general elections.<\/p>\n

The commission had raised the alarm that insecurity could be a threat to the postponement of the polls.<\/p>\n

However, this did not go down well with the majority of Nigerians, who felt there was more to it.<\/p>\n

The reactions forced the INEC to deny that it was planning to postpone the general elections scheduled for next month.<\/p>\n

INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu insisted that the commission is not even contemplating any adjustment to the election timetable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe commission is not contemplating any adjustment to the election timetable, let alone the postponement of the general election.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the avoidance of doubt, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, while Governorship and State Assembly elections will be held two weeks later on Saturday, March 11, 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe repeated assurance by the security agencies for the adequate protection of our personnel, materials and processes also reinforces our determination to proceed,\u201d Yakubu said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Yakubu\u2019s current stance is built around reassurance from security agencies.<\/p>\n

This has been re-echoed by Barrister Kwami Adadevoh, whose legal practice straddles between Nigeria, Ghana and the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would need a security report. But it\u2019s not impossible to have it moved,\u201d Adadevoh tells DAILY POST.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut is there a possibility the elections could be moved?<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. There\u2019s not enough insecurity incidents to warrant that.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt best what they can do is postpone it in the affected areas which are very few at this point.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then these things change very fast.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf INEC has credible intel with regard to security fears, they can ask for a postponement,\u201d Adadevoh adds.<\/p>\n
