Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Governor Benedict Ayade of Cross River State has called on the authorities to always remember, and give care and attention to Nigerian soldiers who fought many wars, including the Nigerian Civil War between 1966 and 1970 and are still alive.<\/p>\n

He said many of them are now aged and are languishing in health or economic conditions without adequate care and support.<\/p>\n

He spoke at today\u2019s 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at the Millennium Park Cenotaph Calabar, the state capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we gather today to honour the veteran soldiers, may it also be a great opportunity to sit back and reflect on the pains of those alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of these soldiers who fought so hard for the country are still alive and retired but have challenges of livelihood.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, an opportunity like this beckons on government at all levels to reflect on the sacrifices these our sons and daughters have made for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor called on governments at all levels to reflect on ex-servicemen\u2019s sacrifices for the country.<\/p>\n

According to Ayade, \u201ctoday\u2019s Armed Forces Remembrance Day brings to mind the pains, agony and melancholy of our fallen heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paid glowing tribute to the fallen heroes, saying the oneness of Nigeria today would not have been possible but for the great heroes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we genuflect and bow in their honour, may we also reflect on those who worked with us and those who served with us as the primary purpose of government is the people\u201d, he stressed.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by top government functionaries, including the Deputy Governor, Professor Evara Esu, service commanders and traditional rulers who also laid wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier.<\/p>\n
