Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Cases of intimidation witnessed during the governorship and House of Assembly elections in Lagos State has sparked tension between indigenes of the state, other Yorubas and the Igbo.<\/p>\n

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the contest after battling opponents and those seeking an end to the \u201cdominance\u201d of Bola Tinubu, a former governor and President-elect.<\/p>\n

Sanwo-Olu ran for another term against Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP), and Abdulazeez Adeniran, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who failed to form an alliance.<\/p>\n

Igbos in some areas entered panic mode after the open display of disdain for them at several polling units, PUs, across the state.<\/p>\n

After a series of complaints, elections in some places were postponed from Saturday to Sunday over the inability of the voters residing there to exercise their right.<\/p>\n

Many of them had been stopped from voting because of a purported agenda to take over the governance of Lagos through Rhodes-Vivour, repeatedly linked to Anambra State.<\/p>\n

In places including Ajah, Sangotedo, Oniru, Yaba, Okota, Ikorodu, etc., thugs suspectedly working for the All Progressives Congress, APC, disrupted the process.<\/p>\n

At Agbo-Oba street in Oshodi, among others, APC followers were caught on camera warning voters intending to thumbprint for other parties to remain indoors.<\/p>\n

Though similar violence occurred during the presidential election, it was perpetrated in the afternoon\/evening while voting was going on or just before votes were counted.<\/p>\n

Despite a curfew declared by the police, thugs armed with dangerous weapons embarked on a tour of PUs, destroying ballot papers and other election materials.<\/p>\n

Those who dared to put up resistance were harmed, as in the case of Mrs Jennifer Efidi. The Surulere resident still exercised her right despite stab wounds and stitches to her face.<\/p>\n

However, the tactic deployed for the poll on March 18 was slightly different: block non-APC voters\/Igbos right from the first stage of the process \u2013 accreditation.<\/p>\n

The situation was so outlandish that a number of Yorubas were denied access to voting stations for \u201clooking like Igbos\u201d. Affected social media users recounted their ordeal.<\/p>\n

Now, Igbos and their businesses are facing open threats in certain areas.<\/p>\n

Some living in environments that are volatile say they fear possible attacks.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, a video taken in the Abule Ado area near Festac Town in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area showed a tense street.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you be Igbo and they catch you outside it\u2019s a…\u201d, a voice said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, more audiovisual recordings of violent scenes from Saturday\u2019s election have emerged to the chagrin of opposition members and supporters.<\/p>\n

At the weekend, the Lagos Parks Management Committee Chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya better known as MC Oluomo mocked LP supporters.<\/p>\n

The staunch APC loyalist called them \u2018Obidiots\u2019 \u2013 a mockery of \u2018Obidients\u2019 (Peter Obi\u2019s admirers) \u2013 saying the victory of the ruling party proved the state belongs to the Yoruba.<\/p>\n

Close watchers say the election brought to the fore the seeming hatred for the people of South-East based in Lagos as many of them were disenfranchised.<\/p>\n

Speaking to DAILY POST, a public affairs analyst, Hope Odabi expressed sadness over what transpired, calling on stakeholders to de-escalate the tension.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe effect of the 2023 Lagos gubernatorial election will hunt our Lagos for a long time. The result will dawn on us as we step into our various work and business spaces in the new week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no way we can look at ourselves the same way again. The blockage of Igbos from performing their civil rights, the harassment and beating of some voters were distasteful and horrific.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Nigerian born and bred in Lagos, I pray we get past this, heal from it and hopefully it doesn\u2019t escalate to a situation that we cannot control,\u201d the media\/PR expert said.<\/p>\n
