Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) has appealed to the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello to urgently address issues of percentage salaries for Local Government workers and primary school teachers in the state.<\/p>\n

The Kogi State NLC Chairman, Gabriel Amari made the appeal on Monday during the Workers Day celebration in Lokoja.<\/p>\n

Amari said the payment percentage salary at the local government and primary school level has crippled the third tier of government and rendered Basic Education ineffective.<\/p>\n

The NLC scribe said, \u201cPublic commentators argue that as long as workers in local government earn percentage salaries, economic growth at the grassroots will remain a mirage.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, the percentage payments to workers at Local government gives rise to financial pressure and increase in rural-urban migrations.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour Excellency, as your tenor draws to an end, we urge you to compel the authorities in charge of local government to restore payment of complete salaries to workers to bring ( them at par with their state counterparts\u201d.<\/p>\n

The labour leader further charged the government to implement the upgrade of Director of Local Administration to Head of Local Administration, Cashback arrears of staff promotions since 2015 and implement the new national minimum wage and its consequential adjusted salary<\/p>\n

Amari, who spoke on the security situation across the country said the level of insecurity has reached a crescendo that is capable of plunging the country into external crisis if the government cannot match their words with actions.<\/p>\n

He said the Nigerian workers and their families are most affected directly or indirectly by all insecurities and violence in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

While recalling that Nigeria was a hub for foreign investment and a tourist destination, Amari lamented that many industries and factories have closed and relocated to neighbouring countries where their safety is guaranteed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hydra-headed insecurity monster has engulfed our country in all forms and all parts: ISWA\/Boko Haram in the North East, banditry and kidnapping that is headquartered -in the North West, Fulani herdsmen attacks mainly in Middle-Belt and other regions, IPOB secessionist killings in the South East, inter-tribal wars Communal clashes, kidnapping for ransom all over Nigeria, the list is endless.<\/p>\n

\u201d It is disheartening and painful to note that despite all your efforts in the area of insecurity, there are still security infractions in the state. Recently, at Aloko Ogane-Enugu Community in Dekina Local Government, many lives and properties were lost due to the herdsmen attack.<\/p>\n

\u201d To face the new wave of Fulani herdsmen gorilla-styled attacks, the government should rejig its security architecture by deploying community police, vigilante and hunter groups. Arguably, conventional policing cannot cover the nukes and crannies of the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cResearch revealed that policing in modern times is hinged on intelligence gathering, so government and all security agencies should focus on intelligence gathering to stay ahead of criminals.<\/p>\n

\u201d It is a fact that Kogi State is an agrarian society; farmers depend on cropping and other agricultural Practices to earn a living. Therefore, the frequent attacks by herdsmen on farmers constitute a huge threat to the social and economic stability of the state\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Responding, Governor Yahaya Bello, represented by Secretary to Kogi State Government Dr Folashade Arike Ayoade said Labour unions have continued to fight tirelessly for the right of workers in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Bello said his administration has prioritized payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities since he assumed office in 2016 and is working round the clock to put an end to percentage salaries at the Local Government level.<\/p>\n
