{"id":88249,"date":"2023-05-18T17:01:35","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T16:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/nhia-pledges-to-increase-access-to-affordable-healthcare"},"modified":"2023-05-18T17:01:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T16:01:35","slug":"nhia-pledges-to-increase-access-to-affordable-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/all-news\/nhia-pledges-to-increase-access-to-affordable-healthcare","title":{"rendered":"NHIA pledges to increase access to affordable healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The leadership of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) said it will increase access to quality and affordable healthcare services for the people of Taraba State and Nigerians at large.<\/p>\n<p>The pledge was made on Thursday at the flag-off of the state\u2019s formal sector health plan and the commencement of access to care for the over 26,000 enrollees of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, BHCPF, in Jalingo, the state capital.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General of NHIA, Professor Mohammed Nasir Sambo, who spoke through the Northeast zonal coordinator of NHIA, Dabo Abdullahi, urged the state government to give much-desired support to the State Contributory Health Insurance Agency.<\/p>\n<p>His call, if adhered to, would enable the agency to implement its formal and informal sector schemes to ensure the creation of a sustainable and robust pool of funds for effective cross-subsidisation, which is one of the cardinal principles of social health insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Towards ensuring optimal uptake and patronage of the access to care programme, he suggested that NHIA and the State Ministry of Health should ensure the budgetary provision for (NHIA\u2019s) equity fund and 25% BHCPT counterpart fund in the state\u2019s budget every year.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, the state governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, who spoke through the Commissioner of Health, Dr Innocent Vakkai, expressed sadness at the state of the health facilities he met on ground when he assumed leadership of the state in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Ishaku, who was of the opinion that his administration, has been able to improve the health sector, said the health sector was nothing to write home about when his administration came on board eight years ago.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWhen I took over the reins of leadership of the state as the Executive Governor, World Bank statistics rated Taraba State as one of the poorest states in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ishaku said further: \u201cI was determined to rescue the citizens of our dear state from the shackles of poverty and poor health indices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a government, our strategy was to empower our citizens health-wise to get out of poverty since health, they say, is wealth.
