Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>A group, Akwa Ibom Oil Producing Community Development Network, has urged the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to mandate all the International Oil Companies operating in the Niger Delta to pay compensations to communities degraded through their oil exploration and exploitation activities.<\/p>\n

The group also urged the President to investigate the ongoing environmental pollution and alleged flagrant abuses of human rights by the multinationals with a view to addressing them.<\/p>\n

In a statement jointly signed by the group\u2019s President-General, Dr Ufot Phenson, and the Secretary, Emmanuel Bassey, and issued to journalists in Uyo on Saturday, the group maintained that the divestment move by the IOCs was an \u201cescape route\u201d to abdicate their responsibilities of cleaning the environment and payment of compensation.<\/p>\n

Phenson lamented that Akwa Ibom people, especially oil bearing communities have been subjected to intense sufferings due to oil spillages and gas flaring by oil companies which pollute their sources of drinking water, contaminate seafoods and damage rooftops of residential\/business buildings in the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the ongoing pollution, human rights abuses and violations, exploitation, frustration and marginalization which the people are suffering on daily basis due to economic activities of oil companies operating in Akwa Ibom State through incessant oil spillages which pollute fishing and drinking water, and making it unfit for drinking.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe unmindful gas flaring by oil companies destroys and damage rooftops of residential\/business buildings affecting real estate business, pollute farm lands and soil thereby making it unproductive,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n

Noting that oil companies are using the divestment policy to escape payment of compensation, he urged the Federal Government to hold any of them wishing to divest accountable by ensuring that it remediates the environment it had polluted.<\/p>\n

Phenson, who also used the occasion to felicitate with President Bola Tinubu and President of the 10th Senate, Godswill Akpabio, noted that his emergence has balanced the political equation in terms of spread.<\/p>\n

He commended Tinubu for the steps already taken in the power sector, provisions of loans to indigent students and the data protection bill, describing it as a\u201dwelcome development for the nation\u201d<\/p>\n
