Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Supreme Court of Nigeria has commenced the process of appointing more judges to join the bench.<\/p>\n

There are 21 slots available to be occupied but eight are needed. The number reduced after the retirement of some Justices.<\/p>\n

The slots are North-Central (2), North-West (1), South-East (2), South-South (1), South-West (2); no vacancy for the North-East.<\/p>\n

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, has urged blocs in the legal profession and the judiciary to nominate candidates.<\/p>\n

They include the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), heads of courts as well as judges of the nation\u2019s highest court.<\/p>\n

NBA President Yakubu Maikyau already sent a memo to lawyers after receiving the notice from Ariwoola on Friday, June 16.<\/p>\n

Maikyau said the CJN asked him \u201cto nominate suitably qualified candidates to be recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court of Nigeria\u201d.<\/p>\n

Interested lawyers from the regions are to submit their expression of interest to the NBA secretariat in Abuja on or before 21 June.<\/p>\n
