Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Niger State House of Assembly has adopted a motion urging Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago to reduce the number of working days for civil servants, following the difficulties being faced due to a fresh hike in petrol price in the country.<\/p>\n

Hon. Umar Nasiru, representing Paikoro Constituency, who moved the motion on matters of urgent public importance, called on Bago to reduce the number of working days to mitigate the hardship being faced by workers in the state.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cthe excessive hardship being experienced as a result of the removal of fuel subsidies has necessitated my call on the governor to reduce working days for civil servants so that they use other days to work at home for their offices.<\/p>\n

\u201cSection 17 subsection 2(c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provided that government actions shall be humane, and to this end, I call on the Executive Arm to reduce the number of working days in Niger State from five to three days and by so doing, it will reduce hardship not only suffered by civil servants but by entire state.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernor Umaru Bago is a generous and grassroots leader, and we believe that he would listen to our plea and grant it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawmaker further cited other states, including Edo and Kwara, have already reduced their working days, arguing that Niger State can also follow suit.<\/p>\n

Other house members noted that the N30,000 minimum wage is no longer sustainable for the state workers.<\/p>\n

They insisted that the state government should come up with measures to cushion the difficulties currently being experienced by workers in the state before the arrival of the Federal Government palliatives.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the lawmakers called on the government to provide public transport for citizens at a subsidized rate.<\/p>\n
