{"id":92897,"date":"2023-07-26T21:28:17","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T20:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/sit-at-home-armed-hoodlums-hijacked-traders-protest-enugu-govt"},"modified":"2023-07-26T21:28:17","modified_gmt":"2023-07-26T20:28:17","slug":"sit-at-home-armed-hoodlums-hijacked-traders-protest-enugu-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/sit-at-home-armed-hoodlums-hijacked-traders-protest-enugu-govt","title":{"rendered":"Sit-at-home: Armed hoodlums hijacked traders\u2019 protest \u2013 Enugu govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Enugu State Government has reacted to the protest by Ogbete Market traders which led to the reported killing of three persons.<\/p>\n<p>Protest had erupted in Enugu Wednesday morning over the sealing of some shops by the Enugu State Government for complying with the Monday sit-at-home.<\/p>\n<p>However, the protest later turned violent, with at least three residents shot dead.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting, the Enugu State Government said it was working to unravel the circumstances behind the incident, as well as the reported casualty.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s position was contained in a statement signed by Professor Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThe Enugu State Government received with grave concern the ugly incident at Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformation available to the Government shows that traders whose shops were sealed for non-compliance with Government\u2019s order banning Monday sit-at-home, defied the instruction on how the shops should be reopened and resorted to self-help by removing the seals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis led to internal squabbles between the market leadership and some of the affected traders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ensuing confrontation resulted in a protest, which was infiltrated and hijacked by dangerously armed hoodlums and miscreants, who broke shops and looted traders\u2019 wares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttempts by security operatives to restore order and prevent further looting were violently resisted by the imported and armed hoodlums.
