Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Human rights activist, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen has urged the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Wale Abbas, to recover firearms used in the communal clash between Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities in the Udu and Warri South-West local government areas.<\/p>\n

He made the call in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the sound of sporadic gunfire, being shot at reprisal (attack), one could tell that the weapons being used are sophisticated and as such, shouldn\u2019t be in the hands of civilians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He noted that the lingering land dispute in the two communities has destroyed properties, displaced thousands of people and taken the lives of others in recent years.<\/p>\n

He recalled that the immediate past governor, Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, had inaugurated an eight-man panel of inquiry to look at the issue and proffer lasting solutions to the issue in May 2016, with the communities agreeing to work together if the recommendations are implemented.<\/p>\n

He said Okowa did not implement the White Paper report of the Prof. Abednego Ekoko-led panel.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf truly it was sincere about finding a lasting solution to the age-long feud, the report would have been implemented and the peace between both communities restored.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese matters would have been resolved a long time ago only if the government had handled it with the sincerity, objectivity and urgency it deserves.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe crisis continued till 2018 and has lingered till date,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Agberen urged the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to revisit the panel\u2019s report and ensure it is critically looked into and implemented or, better still, set up another panel of inquiry and put the disputes to final rest.<\/p>\n
