Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Olokoro clan of Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State has banned the use of cutlasses and other dangerous weapons during the celebration of this year\u2019s new yam festival in all 17 autonomous communities that make up the clan.<\/p>\n

The clan directed the Olokoro Vigilante Group and the Okonko socio-cultural group in the communities to apprehend any defaulter of the directive and hand them over to the police for prosecution.<\/p>\n

Apart from arrest, such defaulters would be fined N30,000.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Olokoro Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH, Eze E.A. Izuogu, Mazi Dike Nzenwa, among other leaders of Olokoro, warned that no cutlass or other dangerous weapons should be brandished or used during the festival.<\/p>\n

It advised that the festival, which would commence with Iwa Ji at Ahia Ukwu Olokoro and subsequent celebration in the 17 communities of the clan thereafter, should be celebrated peacefully in accordance with the peaceful nature of Olokoro cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

It advised all the indigenes and their guests to be peaceful, loving and law-abiding and to avoid violence that could threaten the peace of Olokoro land.<\/p>\n

While reacting to the directive, some community leaders described it as a good step in ensuring that hoodlums did not hijack the new yam festival and engage in clashes and other criminal activities.<\/p>\n
