Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The Super Falcons of Nigeria lost 4-2 against England via penalty shootout in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter on Monday at the ongoing FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Before the Round of 16 clash, the Super Falcons had finished in second place in Group B with five points, behind leaders Australia and ahead of Canada and the Republic of Ireland in third and fourth positions, respectively.<\/p>\n

They played one of the most memorable matches so far in the competition when they beat the Matildas, ranked 10th by FIFA, in front of the home fans. Their failure to repeat the feat against the Irish side ranked 22 consigned them to a second-place finish and set up a Round of 16 clash with England, which finished top of Group D with nine points.<\/p>\n

It was a clash between the fourth and 40th teams on FIFA\u2019s rankings, but the Falcons refused the underdog label and took the fight to the Lionesses.<\/p>\n

The clash between Africa\u2019s No. 1 team and the European champions ended in a 0-0 draw at Lang Park, Brisbane, with the Lionesses down to 10 players in the 85th minute.<\/p>\n

The dynamics of the game, however, did not change in the 30 minutes of extra time, leading to a penalty shootout where Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missed their spot-kicks for the Falcons.<\/p>\n

With the result against England, the Super Falcons crashed out of the competition and will not take part in the quarter-final of the Women\u2019s World Cup. Consequently, Randy Waldrum\u2019s side will return to Nigeria this week, and the players will return to their respective clubs soon after.<\/p>\n

Following their exit from the World Cup, the Super Falcons will now shift their attention to the Women\u2019s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification, where they will face Sao Tome and Principe in a double-leg tie on September 18 and 26 this year.<\/p>\n

In his postmortem of the Super Falcons\u2019 defeat to England, Audu Ojo, the head coach of Dawaki Rangers, told DAILY POST: \u201cI am sad that the Super Falcons did not qualify for the last eight of the World Cup. But at the same time, I am happy because they put in a tough fight against one of the teams that are favourites to win this competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out the lapses of both coach and players in the keenly contested game, where for at least 35 minutes the Nigerian side held the advantage of one extra player on the field of play, following the red card issued to Three Lionesses\u2019 Lauren James.<\/p>\n

According to him: \u201cSuper Falcons coach should have tried to bury the game immediately after Lauren James was given a red card.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the changes he made shouldn\u2019t have been made. The likes of Ayinde, Payne and Kanu shouldn\u2019t have been substituted. Yes, I give him credit for bringing in Oshoala to replace Onumonu because she was tired in the second half.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also pointed out the error in the penalty shootout: \u201cOparanozie had less than four touches when she came on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expected her not to take a penalty alongside Alozie, who did exceptionally well but was tired towards the closing stage of the match when the coach changed her position by playing her on the left side of the attack line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Overall, he gave kudos to the Falcons, nonetheless, saying: \u201cThe girls did really well. Many people did not even expect them to qualify from the group that boasted the likes of Canada, a former Olympic champion, coupled with the speculations regarding their allowances and preparation, but they still performed well. They should keep their heads high despite the result against England. Penalty, as they say, is a lucky game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ojo expects the team to quickly put the disappointment behind them and focus on returning to winning ways in their future endeavours.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, they should come back home, return to the drawing board, and focus on their next outing [Women\u2019s AFCON qualification] later this year,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
