{"id":96388,"date":"2023-09-29T10:35:42","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T09:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/uncategorized\/imo-guber-abure-triumphs-as-supreme-court-affirms-achonu"},"modified":"2023-09-29T13:30:54","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T12:30:54","slug":"imo-guber-abure-triumphs-as-supreme-court-affirms-achonu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\/policy\/imo-guber-abure-triumphs-as-supreme-court-affirms-achonu","title":{"rendered":"Imo guber: Abure triumphs as Supreme Court affirms Achonu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>Ahead of the November 11 gubernatorial election in Imo State, the Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed Senator Athan Achonu as the rightful candidate of the Labor Party.<\/p>\n<p>Achonu, who lost one of his arms in 1970, may become the first physically challenged governor in Nigeria if elected in the forthcoming poll.<\/p>\n<p>One of the governorship aspirants, Basil Maduka, had after the party\u2019s primary election, objected and challenged Achonu\u2019s candidature at both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>However, ruling on the matter at the Supreme Court on Thursday, the apex court threw out the case on the ground that it lacked locus standi.<\/p>\n<p>A panel of five justices led by Iyang Okoro also cautioned the appellant for abusing court process and wasting the time of the courts all through from the lower courts.<\/p>\n<p>Two other respondents in the matter were the Lamidi Apapa-led faction\u2019s candidate, Joseph Ukaegbu, a.k.a Ikenga and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with journalists shortly after the judgment, the counsel to the Labour Party, Barrister Okwudili Anozie, said the controversy surrounding the candidature of Achonu has been put to rest.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cToday at the Supreme Court, the antics of Basil Maduka and his accomplice Joseph Ukaegbu, alias Ikenga, was put to an end as they met their waterloo at the Apex Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday was a culmination of their deceit and lies to Imolites spanning from their misrepresentation of the true position of the judgments of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon the exposure and collapse of their lies before the Supreme Court today, Basil\u2019s Counsel, with tails in between his legs, immediately withdrew his subterfuge appeal that was aimed at giving credence to Ukaegbu\u2019s sham, non-existent primaries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Nigeria.
