Africa-Press – Nigeria. <\/strong><\/span>The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Healthcare Services to investigate alleged mismanagement of funds in the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).<\/p>\n

The resolution was reached on Tuesday after the adoption of a motion moved by Esosa Iyawe.<\/p>\n

In the motion, Iyawe said the NHIA, formerly known as National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), has witnessed decline in quality due to mismanagement.<\/p>\n

He stated that \u201cdespite the huge budgetary allocations, records have shown that only a negligible 3% of persons in the formal sector have access to health insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Iyawe said the officials of the NHIA are conniving with Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) to embezzle the fund.<\/p>\n

He said \u201cthe implementation of the scheme had been mired with corruption, lack of transparency and accountability, irregularities among HMOs and ill-treatment of enrollees by healthcare providers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The motion was adopted unanimously without debate by the House.<\/p>\n
