APR bounced back to claim Game 2 of men’s volleyball league finals after defeating Police VC in four sets (28-26, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23) while Police women also twice came from behind to beat APR women in tiebreak in and claim Game 2 of the women’s finals at Petit Stade on Saturday, May 10.
The stage for champions was set and the trophies were brought to the gymnasium but celebrations were delayed after both APR (men) and Police (women), having lost Game 1, tied the finals series to 1-1, leaving Sunday’s Game 3 to decide who win the title in each category.
The intense rivalry between Rwanda’s top security institutions has been the talk of the season and the two teams again showed it on Saturday.
The pair put up a fierce battle from the very beginning as APR wanted to avoid a defeat against Fred Musoni’s Police who were looking to win Game 2 and lift the title.
In the end, Sammy Mulinge and his army side prevailed.
APR claimed the opening set 28-26 opposite hitter Dennis Ireke led the way to help the team take second set 25-22.
Police rallied to secure third set 25-22 which boosted their hopes of a possible comeback as they forced the game to fourth set.
But Mulinge’s men returned stronger and claimed the fourth set 25-23 to secure the win that tied the best-of-three finals series to 1-1.
In women’s category, resilience and ‘never give up’ kept Police in the game and they eventually achieved a comeback to beat APR in the tiebreak (15-6) after both sides were level with two sets apiece (23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 27-25).
The title will be presented to the teams which will win Sunday’s Game 3 at Petit Stade.
REG, RRA win third place
Prior to the finals, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) claimed bronze after beating Kepler (men and women) respectively.
REG defeated Kepler in a decisive Game 3 tie-break (17-25, 14-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-8) in the men’s category, while RRA swept Kepler women in three straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-21).
