Africa-Press – Rwanda. Mount Kigali University on Friday, August 8, celebrated the achievements of 1,282 graduates during its 27th graduation ceremony.

This event was the university’s first graduation since it became a fully autonomous institution, transitioning from a cross-border campus of Mount Kenya University.

Held under the theme, “Catalysing innovation: Universities as drivers of artificial intelligence,” the ceremony emphasised the institution’s commitment to shaping future leaders in technology and innovation.

Prof Egara Kabaji, Chancellor of Mount Kigali University, described the transition to autonomy as a milestone achieved “with dignity, vision and resolve.” He praised the university’s governance, rooted in local realities and national goals, while embracing global aspirations.

“The name Mount Kigali University is more than a label. It honours the towering Mount Kigali hill, a steadfast emblem of resilience, elevation, and enduring strength,” he said.

Prof Kabaji noted the university’s academic growth, especially its Master’s programmes designed to equip leaders and innovators with practical skills tailored to Rwanda’s needs.

He stressed the graduates’ responsibility, saying, “Graduation is not a conclusion, it is a commissioning. Each degree awarded today marks the beginning of a journey to serve, create, and transform the world around you.”

“You are now ambassadors of this university’s name, its excellence, and its community spirit. We encourage every graduate to maintain lifelong engagement with Mount Kigali University.”

Dr Martin Kimemia, Vice Chancellor, called graduation “a powerful pause,” marking the space between achievement and future ambitions. Reflecting on the theme, he underscored the university’s commitment to innovation and the wise use of artificial intelligence.

He challenged the graduates: “The world is waiting for job creators. Degrees must be engines of innovation, not just papers for employment. May you initiate businesses and create jobs for yourselves and others.”

“Our graduates are employed at a rate of over 80 per cent. This shows we have successfully bridged theory and practice to produce future-ready professionals.”

Dr Kimemia urged graduates to embrace integrity, discipline, and innovation throughout their careers. He also noted ongoing infrastructure improvements, including new tuition blocks, science labs, and hostels to accommodate more students, especially international and those from rural provinces.

Master’s graduate Raissa Igiribambe described the graduation as “a momentous occasion” and expressed heartfelt gratitude.

She thanked educators, mentors, and families for their support, saying, “Believing in us has been our greatest motivation.” She urged her peers to face the future “with courage, conviction, and unwavering determination.”

Bachelor’s graduate and international student Abraham Famanou reflected on their shared journey: “We have learned to challenge assumptions, embrace diverse perspectives, and find our voices. The friendships and bonds we have forged will be treasures we carry always.”

He added, “The world awaits our unique talents, fresh perspectives, and boundless energy. Let us carry the lessons of perseverance, collaboration, and courage into every endeavor. Let’s go make ourselves, our families, and this institution proud.”

Founded in 2010 as a campus of Mount Kenya University, Mount Kigali University initially offered health science, business, and social science courses. It has since grown into a fully-fledged university, committed to driving innovation and national development in Rwanda.
