Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda head coach Adel Amrouche is struggling to digest Amavubi’s loss to Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 6, as the result put their qualification hopes in real danger.
The Super Eagles defeated Rwanda 1-0 on Saturday, boosting their World Cup qualifying hopes though they still trail Group C leaders South Africa by six points.
Amrouche said that his team approached the game the right way but only failed to defeat the Super Eagles because they did not put much pressure on them besides the fact that his players struggled to convert their chances despite a spirited display.
“When we lose, we are not happy. I am not happy because the Super Eagles defeated my team,” Amrouche told the press in a post-match briefing.
“Yes, we came with a plan to defeat Nigeria. We held our opponent, and we have statistics for each player during the game.”
“Sometimes you don’t force in goal but you can score with the mistake, we have learnt from this game and that would put my team to be more focused for the next time,” Amrouche said.
He, however, commended his goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari who saved many shots to deny the hosts chances to score on many occasions.
He described Nigeria coach Eric Chelle as a good coach, saying that his team was good but insists that they were lucky to win.
Rwanda have been struggling recently and their loss in Uyo saw them drop to fourth place, having failed to win any of their last five matches across all competitions.
With the win, Nigeria now occupies the third position with 10 points and will face a crucial away fixture against table leaders South Africa with 16 points on Tuesday, September 9, making the race for World Cup qualification even tighter.
Group C standings after match day 7
South Africa 16 points
Benin 11 points
Nigeria 10 points
Rwanda 8 points
Lesotho 6 points
Zimbabwe 4 points
