Africa-Press – Rwanda. Eight football fans were struck by lightning on October 1 while watching the CAF Champions League match between APR FC and Egypt’s Pyramids FC at a bar located in Kayonza District.
The incident happened around 3p.m. in Kabura Cell, Kabarondo Sector, where a group of residents had gathered in a local bar to follow the game on television. Heavy rain and thunderstorms reportedly hit the place during the match.
“The incident was well managed. The eight who were seriously injured were taken to Kabarondo Health Centre, and there is hope they will all be discharged today,” John Bosco Nyemazi, the Mayor of Kayonza District, told The New Times on Thursday, October 2.
Nyemazi urged residents to take precautions during storms and warned against the risks of using electrical appliances, including television sets, when it is raining.
“Watching TVs or leaving electronic equipment connected to electricity during rainfall is a mistake and it should serve as a lesson to both business operators and residents. We will continue mobilizing people to avoid such malpractices,” he said.
The match, played at Kigali Pele Stadium, ended 2-0 in favour of Pyramids FC courtesy of a double from Congolese striker Fiston Kalala Mayele.
The second leg is set for October 8 in Cairo.
