Africa-Press – Rwanda. Benin head coach Gernot Rohr has said their number one target is to win in Kigali against Rwanda as race for ticket to the 2026 World Cup reaches a crucial stage.
Benin face Amavubi at Amahoro Stadium on October 10 before traveling to Uyo for the final qualifying match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Abidjan on October 14.
Rohr’s side sits top of Group C with 14 points and are only ahead of second-placed South Africa by goal difference after the latter were docked three points and three goals for fielding an ineligible player.
Prior to their trip to Kigali, Rohr said, “Our priority is to win our match in Rwanda before thinking of something else.”
“We’re doing everything we can to achieve that. Regardless of the results of other matches, we can keep our fate in our own hands. And that’s a real advantage.” He added.
He said he expects his team to play “like true cheetahs” to achieve this target.
Meanwhile, Rwanda, who are also level on 11 points with Nigeria, will won’t take the match lightly as a win would put the World Cup 2026 qualifier down the wire until the last match.
Beating Benin would put them among real contenders for World Cup qualification before their trip to South Africa for the last qualifier.
