Africa-Press – Rwanda. Gisagara VC came from a set down to beat Rwanda Energy Group (REG) in four sets (27–29, 25–18, 25–15, 25–22) in a thrilling national volleyball league match held at Petit Stade on Friday, November 21.
Gisagara District Mayor Jérôme Rutaburingoga had traveled to Kigali to watch his side win the crunch game to keep their winning momentum and continue to position themselves among favourites for the title this season. Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire was also in attendance for the game.
REG VC struggled in the absence of their captain Kavalo Akumuntu and it cost them the match.
The electricians started brightly and won the first set 29–27 to lead the match before Yakan Guma’s men responded strongly to claim three straight sets. Middle blocker Djibril Adam and right attacker Samuel Niyogisubizo were instrumental, combining effectively at the net to secure the hard fought victory.
In the women’s category, APR WVC defeated rivals Police WVC in four sets (19–25, 25–23, 25–18, 27–25) in what was the pair’s first meeting of the season.
Outside attacker Benitha Mukandayisenga was instrumental as the army side overcame the reigning champions.
“This game wasn’t easy, especially since we always face each other in tough moments. But I’m glad we earned this victory,” she told Times Sport.
Volleyball league action will continue on Saturday, November 22, at Ste Famille
Gymnasium.
