Africa-Press – Rwanda. The Government of Rwanda on Tuesday, August 16, congratulated Kenya’s President-elect William Ruto following his victory in last week’s elections.

Earlier, on Monday, Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Ruto as winner of the presidential election with 7,176 141 votes, representing 50.49 per cent of the total valid votes.

“The Government and people of the Republic of Rwanda express hearty congratulations to the Government and people of the Republic of Kenya on the successful general elections held on 9th August 2022,” a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reads in part.

It adds, “The Government of Rwanda further wishes to congratulate His Excellency William Samoei Ruto on being elected as the new President of the Republic of Kenya.”

“The Government of Rwanda attaches great importance to the cooperation between Kenya and Rwanda and wishes to take this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to further strengthen the bond of friendship that exists between the two countries.”

Ruto, who has served as Kenya’s Deputy President for the last ten years, defeated veteran opposition figure Raila Odinga, who came second with 6,942, 930 votes, representing 48.85 per cent, according to the results announced by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

However, Odinga rejected the results Tuesday, arguing they had been tampered with. He is expected to take the matter to court.

Four of the seven IEBC commissioners also disassociated themselves from the results, but Chebukati insisted they reflected the will of Kenyan voters.

Several other governments and leaders have also congratulated Ruto.
