Kwibuka 31: APR BBC honour Genocide victims in Kigali

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Players, coaches and staff of APR Basketball Club on Saturday, April 12, visited Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre in Gisozi as part of the club’s initiative to honor victims slain during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The guests paid a visit to the memorial centre which is home to more than 250,000 remains of Tutsi victims. During the tour, they were briefed on how the Genocide was planned and carried out and how it was stopped by the RPF-Inkotanyi and the RPA forces that were affiliated with it.

After the tour, they laid a wreath to the memorial grave in honour of the genocide victims.

Jean Victor Mukama, who represented his colleagues at APR, expressed that he learned a lot on his first visit to the Genocide Memorial.

“This is my first time visiting the memorial. The history of our parents is sad. I think it is good for us to know the history of our country and we learned a lot,” Mukama said.

It was also a good opportunity for the players of the team, which includes various foreigners and Rwandans born abroad, to understand the history of the country.

After stopping the Genocide, the RPA forces began to rebuild the country from the ashes in the aftermath of the horrible massacres which left more than a million lives lost in the space of 100 days.

During the rebuilding process, APR established a host of teams which have been competing in various sports disciplines including Basketball, football, track and field, handball and volleyball among both men and women categories.
