Basketball: Osborn Shema returns from lengthy injury layoff

Africa-Press – Rwanda. APR center Osborn Shema has resumed training after spending nine months on the sidelines with a serious injury.

The 27-year-old travelled to Qatar in March for surgery, just days after picking up the injury during APR’s 94-92 win over United Generation Basketball (UGB) in the 2025 GMT final on April 27.

He underwent treatment at Aspetar, a leading orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital in Doha, which has handled top athletes over the years, including Brazilian star Neymar in 2023.

APR’s team doctor told Times Sport that Shema is now training three days a week in addition to daily gym sessions.

“Shema has started light exercises and gym work, and he will soon rejoin his teammates because his recovery progress is very encouraging,” the doctor said.

Shema, who previously balanced basketball and academics, has already shown his potential on the national team, playing a key role in helping Rwanda qualify for the 2023 FIBA AfroCAN tournament.

He has played for several schools in the United States since 2017 and graduated from Iona University.

During his time in the U.S., he recorded several standout achievements, including being named to the Western Junior College Athletic Conference’s best team and earning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2020.
