Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>Rwandan rally driver Christian Kanangire has etched his name in history after securing an impressive performance at the 2026 Safari Rally Kenya on March 15\u2014becoming the first Rwandan to compete and finish a WRC event.<\/p>\n

For Kanangire, the milestone represents a bold statement about Rwanda\u2019s growing potential in motorsport.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis result speaks for itself,\u201d he said. \u201cIt shows that Rwanda is capable\u2014and if we do things right, we can even win.\u201d<\/p>\n

Competing against world-class drivers, Kanangire and his co-driver Kevin Shaka Mujiji entered the race with modest expectations\u2014simply to finish.<\/p>\n

Instead, they exceeded all projections.<\/p>\n

Driving a relatively older car\u2014a 2006 Subaru N12\u2014and battling mechanical setbacks that cost them over an hour, the duo fought back to secure a podium finish in the ARC2 category.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a miracle,\u201d Kanangire admitted. \u201cWe had no proper practice before the race, and the conditions were completely new to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Rally like no other<\/p>\n

The Safari Rally proved one of the toughest tests of Kanangire\u2019s career. From transporting the car from Rwanda to Kenya to navigating punishing terrain filled with rocks, rivers, and extreme conditions, every stage pushed the team to its limits.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were roads full of rocks. We had to cross rivers while driving\u2014something we had never done before\u2014and make sure the car didn\u2019t get stuck,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to learn quickly, adapt, and push ourselves beyond our limits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teamwork proved crucial, with Kanangire praising his co-driver\u2019s role.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe (Shyaka) is a big part of this success. He deserves credit for the work he put into this race.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond personal success, Kanangire sees his journey as a mission to represent Rwanda on the global stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no longer just about me,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are racing for the national flag. Every race is about putting Rwanda on the podium.\u201d<\/p>\n

Childhood dream…<\/p>\n

Kanangire\u2019s passion for motorsport began at just eight years old, when his mother took him to watch a rally in Huye\u2014then known as Rallye de Butare.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat moment changed everything,\u201d he recalled. \u201cI knew I wanted to become a rally driver.\u201d<\/p>\n

His journey was far from easy.<\/p>\n

He began in 2009 as a timekeeper, learning the sport from the ground up before eventually getting behind the wheel. A chance encounter with an Indian mentor opened the door to his first driving experience in a Toyota Celica GT2.<\/p>\n

Years later, after training in Kenya, he made his competitive debut in Rwanda in 2017, finishing an impressive sixth among seasoned drivers.<\/p>\n

Like many drivers, Kanangire faced significant financial hurdles.<\/p>\n

\u201cMotorsport is extremely expensive,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom tyres to suspension and safety gear, everything requires heavy investment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Challenges<\/p>\n

Sponsorship remains limited in Rwanda, where the sport is still developing. He also endured physical setbacks, including an accident that left him with a broken hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you fall, you have to get up, learn from your mistakes, and come back stronger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Building the future<\/p>\n

Determined to give back, Kanangire co-founded Karisimbi Motorsports, a club focused on nurturing young talent and professionalising rally racing in Rwanda.<\/p>\n

The initiative is already showing results. In 2024, he won the national championship, while his club also claimed top honours.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to train young drivers early. The future of motorsport in Rwanda depends on the next generation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kanangire believes Rwanda has the potential to become a strong force in motorsport.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have good roads, talent, and growing institutional support,\u201d he said, pointing to increased collaboration with international bodies such as FIA.<\/p>\n

However, he emphasised the need for sustained investment and long-term planning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have ambition\u2014now we need to sustain it.\u201d<\/p>\n

To young Rwandans dreaming of motorsport, his message is simple, \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid. Motorsport is not as dangerous as people think. If you love it, go for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
