{"id":37705,"date":"2023-03-18T15:42:56","date_gmt":"2023-03-18T15:42:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/rwanda\/all-news\/rwandans-in-tunisia-safe-despite-racist-attacks"},"modified":"2023-03-18T17:13:25","modified_gmt":"2023-03-18T17:13:25","slug":"rwandans-in-tunisia-safe-despite-racist-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/rwanda\/policy\/rwandans-in-tunisia-safe-despite-racist-attacks","title":{"rendered":"Rwandans in Tunisia safe despite \u2018racist\u2019 attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>Rwandan citizens in Tunisia are safe and there is no plan to fly them back home, an official has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Following a wave of attacks on Sub-Saharan Africans in the north African country, countries like Guinea and Ivory Coast repatriated hundreds of their citizens, some of whom with injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy government spokesperson, Alain Mukuralinda, told The New Times that there were five Rwandans in Tunisia: two charity workers, a pastor and his wife, and a nun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the five people are safe and sound,\u201d Mukuralinda said, adding that the foreign ministry was monitoring the situation in Tunisia.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Tunisia\u2019s President Kais Saied claimed there were \u201chordes of illegal migrants\u201d from sub-Saharan Africa who were part of a \u201ccriminal plan&#8221; to change the country&#8217;s demographics.<\/p>\n<p>Saied\u2019s words were followed by attacks on sub-Saharans in Tunisia, sparking outrage across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Some black Africans in Tunisia lost their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmigrants should not be attacked,\u201d Mukuralinda said. \u201cSome of them fled insecurity, others are economic migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the president\u2019s statements about sub-Saharan African might have contributed to the xenophobic climate in Tunisia.<\/p>\n<p>The African Union condemned the \u201cracial statements\u201d by Tunisian authorities, which were against the organisation\u2019s spirit.<\/p>\n<p>La Francophonie\u2019s Secretary General, Louise Mushikiwabo, was \u201cvery shocked\u201d by President Saied\u2019s words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe words of the Tunisian president have done a lot of harm,\u201d Mushikiwabo told French channel TV5 Monde.<\/p>\n<p>President Saied has since retracted his controversial statements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened was a misunderstanding,\u201d Saied said on March 8, in Carthage near the capital Tunis, in the presence of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am African, and proud to be so,\u201d he said in the televised comments, adding that sub-Saharan Africans are \u201cour brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mukuralinda said Africans who want unity on the continent should not be discouraged by what happened after the Tunisian president\u2019s words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny divisions amongst Africans is an advantage for other people who don\u2019t want us to unite,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/rwanda\">Rwanda<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Rwanda.
