Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>A total of 130 people have lost their lives across the Western, Northern and Southern Province, after a devastating downpour caused floods and mudslides on the night of Tuesday, May 2, and the early hours of May 3.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the national broadcaster, Alain Mukuralinda, deputy government spokesperson said that Rubavu, Karongi, Rutsiro, Nyabihu and Ngororero were among the most affected districts in the flooded area.<\/p>\n

The latest figures, he said, indicate that 77 sustained injuries while 36 were rushed for medical treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere remains five people whose bodies have not been found until now, but the government and several other entities have pulled efforts together towards search and rescue of the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking about some of the destroyed property, Mukuralinda said that at least 5,147 houses have been swept away, with the majority located in Rubavu District.<\/p>\n

Also in poor conditions are 2,500 houses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are relocating the owners, even those whose houses are in poor condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mukuralinda also pointed out infrastructure such as water plants, electricity lines, telecommunication are among property damaged.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have the data and a clear picture on the effects of the disasters. We urge citizens to remain calm and adhere to the conditions put in place by the command center as the government further intervenes in the response effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cabinet ministers on ground<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Mukuralinda, the disastrous situation has convened several cabinet ministers on ground, security organs as well as other institutions to fast-track the rescue and search operations.<\/p>\n

Mukuralinda did not disclose the coordinator of the ongoing effort but said that officials from the office of the President, the Prime Minister are among the high ranked officials on ground.<\/p>\n

Also on the ground, he said, are the local government Minister, emergency management Minister, Police chiefs, Governors among others.<\/p>\n
