Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>Musanze district, known as the country’s potato production hub due to its favorable climate and fertile volcanic soil, is facing a challenge in accessing improved potato seeds.<\/p>\n

The district, located in the Northern Province is renowned for its beloved ‘Kinigi’ potato variety, commonly used for making potato chips or boiled with vegetables, known as Imvange, a popular dish in local villages.<\/p>\n

During the recent ‘Inteko z\u2019Abaturage’ or Citizen Assemblies held in Kabazungu Cell, Musanze sector on Tuesday, June 21, concerns were raised about the lack of improved potato seeds and fertilizers, hindering the ability of some residents to improve their livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Local farmers who spoke with The New Times cited the lack of access to improved and subsidized potato seeds as a major obstacle that affects their livelihoods and prevents them from affording health insurance.<\/p>\n

Irish potato cultivation remains a significant source of income and a staple food for many households in Musanze. Small farmers such as Bernadette Nzamukosha and The\u0301ogene Nshimiyimana, who reside in Kabazungu Cell, Musanze Sector, have been particularly impacted by the lack of financial resources for Mutuelle de Sante\u0301.<\/p>\n

“We cultivate, but our efforts yield nothing. We need support to acquire good potato seeds and government assistance with fertilizers to improve our lives independently,” Nzamukosha said.<\/p>\n

Nshimiyimana added, “Our area produces a vast amount of potatoes, but we suffer losses due to the unavailability of quality seeds and fertilizers. We urge the government to provide us with good [potato] seeds.”<\/p>\n

According to Jean Ngendahayo, the Director of Agriculture and Animal Resources in Musanze District, inadequate harvest results can be attributed to poor agricultural practices, including the use of inappropriate seeds and neglecting the use of fertilizers.<\/p>\n

He recommends that residents collaborate with seed multipliers and local authorities, emphasizing the importance of ‘Nkunganire,’ a government initiative that provides potato seeds to small farmers at minimal costs.<\/p>\n
