Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>President Paul Kagame on Friday, January 5, received Gen Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the Commander of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who is on a regional tour of African countries.<\/p>\n

The RSF Commander is undertaking his first trip abroad amid regional diplomatic efforts to try to forge a ceasefire in the war in his country. Fierce fighting erupted between the RSF and Sudan’s army in mid-April 2023.<\/p>\n

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Daglo briefed President Kagame on the political and security situation in Sudan and the ongoing peace initiatives.<\/p>\n

President Kagame pledged Rwanda’s support for the ongoing peace and dialogue efforts to end the war between SAF and RSF.<\/p>\n

“He reiterated the need for a political solution to end the suffering of the people of Sudan,” a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states.<\/p>\n

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an eight-nation East African bloc headquartered in Djibouti, is leading diplomatic efforts to broker a meeting between Daglo and his rival, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.<\/p>\n

It is hoped that the IGAD talks will bring about a political settlement that would effect lasting peace in Sudan.<\/p>\n

After meeting President Kagame, Daglo posted on X that, “President Paul Kagame listened to our vision for the future of our country, which begins with ending the war, achieving security and stability, and restoring civilian democratic governance. We look with admiration at this great country, which has become an inspiration for many nations aspiring to rise from the ruins of wars and conflicts towards peace, development, progress, and prosperity.<\/p>\n

“We look forward to Rwanda’s efforts, given its outstanding experience and wise leadership, to assist our people in overcoming this crisis and restoring security and stability.”<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Daglo met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria.<\/p>\n

Daglo has also met regional leaders in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Djibouti since late December 2023.<\/p>\n
