Frenchman Calvin Hemery won his Rwanda Challenger 2 first round match against Bodgan Bobrov 6-3, 6-4 on center court to set up a second round meeting with Corentin Denolly on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Third Seed dominated his Russian opponent with powerful serves, taking the first set 6-3 in 39 minutes. The second set was a bit more competitive as Bobrov won more points on his own serve, but Calvin was just too good for him, and took the second set 6-4 in 41 minutes.<\/p>\n

His next opponent, Denolly, beat American Joshua Sheehy 6-1, 6-4 on Monday.<\/p>\n

After the match, Calvin said, “I am feeling good, I am here now two weeks, so I’m used to the weather and altitude. I am playing much better than the first week, and am very happy about that.”<\/p>\n

“I know (Bobrov) is a very good player, he has a very good hand, so I knew it (would) be a tough match, I had to stay focused. I served well, I had a lot of easy points on my serve and my return games, it was a good match,” the 28-year old told Times Sport.<\/p>\n

He added that, “I found a way to put the balls in, unlike last week when I was putting them out. This week I’m comfortable with my tennis, I feel I can put the ball in when I want, which is very important for my confidence, so I am happy.”<\/p>\n

The world number 216 had words of praise for his opponent, who is ranked 372, “Bobrov plays with the ball, knows how to slice, do drop shots, he is very intelligent on the court, so winning this match proves I am feeling good.”<\/p>\n

Week 1 finalist Marco Trungelliti overcame a slow start in his first round with American Jacob Brumm, to win 7-5, 6-2 in 1 hour 28 minutes.<\/p>\n

Asked how he managed to overcome a slow start, the Argentine world number 208 said, “Winning the first match is important, because if you don’t win the first you’re not able to win the second, (in tennis) you have one chance to win.”<\/p>\n

“It was tough for me, mentally, I was not really ready at the beginning, I think I had my head still on last week, and that is not a proper way to approach a match.”<\/p>\n

“It took me a while, the other guy was playing better, he had more chances than me, and then suddenly at 5-5 I had a few break points, I made it then I served for the set, I did good. I started stronger in the second set, it gave me more confidence and for him, it was rougher to maintain the level,” note the 34-year old.<\/p>\n

Hemery will face Austrian qualifier Thomas Fancutt in the next round. Fancutt beat Indian Dev. SD Prajwal 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the first round encounter between top seed Ivan Gakhov and Week 1 winner Kamil Majchrzak which has been dubbed the “final” before the real final, was suspended due to rain with the score evenly poised.<\/p>\n

Pole Majchrzak won the first set 6-3 but Gakhov rallied to take the second 7-5. By the time rain interrupted, the Russian was leading 5-4 in the third set, at 2 hours 28 minutes.<\/p>\n

It was a match of truly high quality tennis from both players, who gave absolutely everything in their repertoire, and the fans loved and cheered every point won by either (player).<\/p>\n

Two other first round matches were also affected, including Zimbabwean Benjamin Lock against Italian Gabriele Pennaforti. Lock had won the first set 6-3 while the second set was 4-4 (40-40) by the time the game was postponed.<\/p>\n

Austrian David Pichler was one up 6-2 against Akram El Sallaly (EGY) and 4-2 (30-15) in the second. The suspended matches will be completed Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Rwandan wildcard Ernest Habiyambere bowed out of the first round after just 46 minutes following a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Israeli Daniel Cukierman. Swiss Damien Wenger beat Romanian eighth seed Nicholas David Ionel 7-5, 6-2.<\/p>\n

American Alafia Ayeni defeated compatriot Jaycer Lyeons 6-4, 6-3. Mohamed Safwat (EGY) beat Seventh Seed Max Houkes (NED) 6-2, 6-4 and Herman Casanova (ARG) defeated French qualifier Florent Bax 6-2, 6-5.<\/p>\n

Week 1 semi-finalist Stefan Kozlov progressed to the next round after winning the battle of Americans 6-3, 6-4 against qualifier Noah Schachter.<\/p>\n
