Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>The President, Chief Prosecutor and Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), are in Kigali for the 30th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from the mechanism, the three officials \u2013 President Graciela Gatti Santana, Prosecutor Serge Brammertz and Registrar Abubacarr Tambadou, are in the country with the main purpose of attending at a solemn ceremony of remembrance to mark the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.<\/p>\n

The ceremony will take place at BK Arena on Sunday, April 7, and will be attended by various local and foreign dignitaries. President Paul Kagame is expected to deliver remarks at the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn anticipation of this solemn event, all three Mechanism Principals wish to convey their utmost respect for the victims and survivors of these atrocities and their admiration for the resilience of the Rwandan people who rebuilt their nation and continue making progress in achieving forgiveness and restoring inter-ethnic relations,\u201d reads the IRMCT\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Mechanism would also like to reiterate on this occasion its steadfast commitment to ensuring that the judicial findings of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the Mechanism about the Genocide are widely accessible and are utilised in the fight against the divisive phenomenon of genocide denial, as well as in assisting the delivery of justice before national courts,\u201d it further read.<\/p>\n

Prior to the main commemorative event, the IRMCT\u2019s President and the Registrar of the Mechanism are taking part in a conference bringing together Rwandan and international lawyers, activists and others to discuss the duty to protect the truth and fight denial on Friday, April 5.<\/p>\n
