Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>While the overarching goal of ‘ConnectRwanda 2.0’ is to narrow the digital divide by providing affordable 4G smartphones to over a million Rwandans across the country, Airtel Rwanda on May 10 once more took the second phase of its campaign to Rusizi District, Western Province, in a bid to bring digital connectivity to every corner of Rwanda.<\/p>\n

The initiative, held at Kamashangi football pitch in Kamashangi Sector, saw residents gaining access to affordable 4G smartphones for just Rwf20,000, marking a significant step in narrowing the digital divide across the country and boosting its access.<\/p>\n

Paulian Kazibwe, the Airtel Rwanda Finance Director, said that over the last few months, the company distributed more than 520, 000 of these life-changing phones to Rwandans \u201cthrough all our shops, kiosks, and branches all over the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn partnership with the Ministry of ICT and Innovation (MINICT), Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA) and Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA), we are now taking it to a bigger notch. We are targeting to reach the entire one million customers over the next three months,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kazibwe emphasised that the phone includes a special package featuring unlimited calls, SMS to all networks in Rwanda, and 30 gigabytes per month. \u201cSimply load Rwf1,000 and you\u2019re set to enjoy the service going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAirtel remains committed to playing this big role to make Rwanda a digital economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Locals expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the transformative impact it will have on their lives.<\/p>\n

John Ruhamiriza, an area resident who had been waiting for the phone for a long time, said that he struggled to find a safe place to keep his money. \u201cNow, that\u2019s all in the past,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ruhamiriza, a blacksmith by profession, revealed that being offline caused him losses due to inefficient communication with his regular clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to make more money since my clients will be reaching out to me anytime, thanks to Airtel Rwanda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Aman Sebakundwa won and received a phone by correctly answering questions about Airtel, showcasing his understanding of the company\u2019s widespread services. Sebakundwa, a security guard at construction sites, believes the phone will assist him in increasing awareness of his activities.<\/p>\n

Gordon Kalema, the Director General of Digital Transformation at MINICT, commended Airtel Rwanda’s initiative for empowering individuals and families with access to digital services nationwide.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI\u2019ve been informed that Rusizi residents are engaged in various money-making ventures, including farming and business. These phones offer conveniences like online transactions, ordering, Irembo services, educational support, and more, saving time and eliminating travel expenses by enabling access to these services from anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWhoever gets a phone, life changes immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kalema pointed out that various activities are underway, nationwide, to support the operation of digital tools. These include setting up infrastructure like cellular network towers and other internet distribution facilitators.<\/p>\n

He noted: \u201cThe government, along with telecommunication companies, plans to set up over 700 cellular network towers nationwide in less than two years. In Rusizi District, specifically, seven cellular network towers will be established by December this year. This initiative aims to address the issue of poor or insufficient network coverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, there\u2019s an ongoing digital literacy campaign led by digital ambassadors across the country. In Rusizi alone, there are 46 ambassadors dedicated solely to teaching residents how to utilise digital gadgets effectively. It doesn\u2019t make sense to own a device without knowing how to use it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI encourage everyone to make the most of these resources and for their collective use within families. Let it be a family asset, benefiting all members collectively.\u201d<\/p>\n

The telecom giant successfully launched similar initiatives in other districts across the country including Kayonza, Rubavu, Nyagatare, Burera, Nyamasheke, and Nyanza. Airtel Rwanda\u2019s expansion to Rusizi demonstrates its commitment to reaching every Rwandan with accessible technology.<\/p>\n

The move is a collaborative effort between the Rwandan government and Airtel. Initially, each smartphone was valued at over Rwf70,000, but had a significant portion covered by partners, allowing people to acquire it for only Rwf20,000.<\/p>\n

The smartphones are equipped with impressive features including 4G capability, dual cameras, 32 gigabytes of ROM, 2 gigabytes of RAM, and a 5-inch screen to give you a very seamless experience.<\/p>\n
