Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>Local Weightlifting and Powerlifting body has announced a tournament in honour of victims killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is set for June 2-19.<\/p>\n

The tournament, which is in its second edition, will be staged at various venues across the country, wit the finals set to take place at Fitness Point in Nyarutarama, a fitness spot located in Nyarutarama.<\/p>\n

Just Bwanakweli, the federation Secretary-General told Times Sport that the tournament returns at a time the they are looking to make it an annual event.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make it an annual event. At the moment, we don\u2019t have a national team so such competitions will help us to select the best competitors,\u201d said Bwanakweli<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are members of the International Weightlifting Federation, and we have athletes who participate in international competitions. We even aim to participate in the Olympic Games. During the memorial event, we plan to select athletes for the sport, making it a significant occasion. \u201c<\/p>\n

The tournament will feature various categories including Squat, Deadlift, Bench press, Strongman, Snatch, Clean and Jerk.<\/p>\n

Registration started on April 18, and the competition will take place at four sites, starting in Rubavu District on May 26.<\/p>\n

The first competition in Kigali will take place on June 2, at the KT Fitness Center Gym at Gisimenti. The second competition will take place on June 9, at Fitness Point Nyarutarama. The final on June 16 at roundabout located between Radisson Blu Hotel and Kigali Heights.<\/p>\n

The competition is open to both men and women, and it will follow worldwide rules.<\/p>\n

Before the finals slated for May 19, gym members and athletes will participate in a solemn walk from Kinamba to Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre to honour more than 250,000 victims laid to rest at the site.<\/p>\n

Men’s Categories: 59kg, 67kg, 75kg, 85kg, 94kg, 104kg, 105kg+<\/p>\n

Women’s Categories: 59kg, 68kg, 76kg, 86kg, 86kg+.<\/p>\n
