Africa-Press – Rwanda. <\/strong><\/span>The fifth edition of the Chinese Ambassador’s Cup wrapped up with entertaining table tennis battles from young to elite players who showcasing exceptional talent and producing performances which kept the sport enthusiast abuzz.<\/p>\n

Held in the weekend of November 2-3 at NPC Rwanda Gymnasium, Remera, the competition attracted over 120 participants who competed in various age categories, with key figures like Chinese Ambassador Wang Xuekun and Rwanda Table Tennis Association President John Bosco Birungi in attendance.<\/p>\n

Eric Niyonizigiye won the tournament in the men\u2019s over-19 category after beating Didier Hahirwabasenga 3-1 in a four-set thriller.<\/p>\n

Hervine Tumukunde shined in the women\u2019s over-19 competition, decisively defeating Kelia Hirwa 3-0. In the under-12 girls, Elizabeth Kamikazi triumphed over My Friend Rukoma 3-0, while Diane Uwase secured the under-15 girls\u2019 title after overcoming Kamikazi 3-1.<\/p>\n

Ebong Shukuru showcased his prowess by winning both the boys\u2019 under-12 and under-15 titles, defeating Didier Gisubizo 3-0 in both categories. A unique rule was applied when the same players met in multiple finals.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Blaise Shimirwa took home the boys\u2019 under-19 trophy after beating The\u0301ophile Mugisha 3-1 in the final while Solange Ntakirutimana dominated Aline Ishime in the girls\u2019 under-19 final which she won 3-0.<\/p>\n

For the first time in Rwanda\u2019s table tennis history, doubles matches were featured in the competition.<\/p>\n

In the men\u2019s doubles, Ebong Shukuru and Prince Gisubizo narrowly beat Blaise Shimirwa and Steven Gisubizo 3-2 in a thrilling match. The women\u2019s doubles saw Hervine Tumukunde and Regine Mbabazi claim victory over Elizabeth Kamikazi and Diane Uwase 3-1.<\/p>\n

The success of these events has spurred plans to introduce mixed doubles in future competitions, according to organisers.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Wang lauded the efforts of the Rwanda Table Tennis Federation, emphasizing the progress in youth participation.<\/p>\n

“I appreciate the Federation for their tremendous efforts with young players. The number of children participating and the growth in skill level is impressive,” Wang said, committing continued support from the Chinese Embassy.<\/p>\n

John Bosco Birungi, President of the Rwanda Table Tennis Association, highlighted the positive impact of China\u2019s support in nurturing the sport.<\/p>\n

“China\u2019s support has been invaluable in elevating table tennis in Rwanda. We encourage parents to support their children and get them involved, as this sport is now being integrated into schools across the country,” he noted<\/p>\n
