The Gaston Berger University (UGB) of Saint-Louis (north) is hosting, from May 18 to 20, a symposium on the centenary of filmmaker Sembène Ousmane (1923-2007), at the initiative of the Arts and Culture Civilization Training and Research Unit (UFR CRAC), APS learned from the organizers on Tuesday.
Ousmane Sembène would have been 100 years old on January 1, 2023, they point out in a press release. Senegalese writer, screenwriter and director, Sembène has become a major figure in contemporary Africa both for his multifaceted commitment and the social and political issues he has taken on, adds the text.
»Placés souvent et bien exagérément dans un contexte, les livres et films de Sembène Ousmane n’échappent plus aujourd’hui à une lecture à contre-fil qui dévoile de nouveaux paradigmes », lit-on dans le document.
The inaugural speech will be delivered by the Minister of Culture and Historical Heritage, Aliou Sow, informs the same source, adding that academics and men of culture interested in the work of this illustrious filmmaker will take part in the colloquium which will attempt to respond to the question: « What literary or cinematographic practices prolong or update it today? What spaces underlie it? Are they reflexive, protesting, singular or creative? « .
