Africa-Press – Senegal. The Internet connection by mobile data has been restored without distinction of time slots, the Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Economy said on Tuesday.

In a press release, the ministry specifies that « telephone operators were required for the purpose of implementing the measure ».

The state had undertaken a suspension of the Internet connection by mobile data, for several hours of the day since Sunday, due to the dissemination of “hateful and subversive messages” by certain users.

He had taken this measure two days after the outbreak of the riots which caused the death of 16 people, several injuries and significant material damage.

In a press release, the Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Economy announced on Sunday a temporary suspension of the Internet connection “in certain localities of the country and on certain time slots”.

Violent demonstrations took place in Dakar and other cities in Senegal, including Ziguinchor (south), following the sentencing of opponent Ousmane Sonko to two years in prison for « corruption of youth » .

He was tried for rape and death threats against Adji Sarr, an ex-masseuse, employee of a beauty salon in Dakar.

The court disqualified as youth corruption the acts of rape and death threats for which he was prosecuted.

The prison sentence is likely to prevent Mr Sonko from running in the 2024 presidential election, for which he has declared himself a candidate, his lawyers say, relying on the country’s electoral code.
