Africa-Press – Senegal.
« I would like, at the beginning of my communication, to bow to the memory of the people who died during the serious incidents noted in recent days in the regions of Dakar and Ziguinchor. I would like, on this occasion, to ask you to rise to observe a minute of silence and prayer. At the same time, I wish a speedy recovery to the injured, » he said as he opened the weekly government meeting.
Ndèye Khady Ndiaye, the owner of the massage parlor where the alleged facts took place, was sentenced to two years in prison for incitement to debauchery. The criminal chamber also condemned Ms. Ndiaye to pay a fine of 600,000 CFA francs.
Ousmane Sonko and Ndèye Khady Ndiaye must jointly pay 20 million CFA francs in damages to Adji Sarr, a former employee of Sweet Beauté, a massage parlor in Dakar, according to the decision rendered by the court.
The demonstrators were protesting against the threat of ineligibility that this conviction poses to the head of the leader of Pastef-Les patriotes, declared candidate for the presidential election of 2024. After the decision rendered by the criminal chamber, Me Djiby Diagne, the one of his lawyers, declared that « the candidacy of Ousmane Sonko is mortgaged ».
On Saturday, Interior Minister Antoine Diome said 15 people had been killed during violent protests between Thursday and Friday.
On Sunday, the Interior Ministry announced a new death caused by the riots.
Antoine Diome also reported an infiltration of protesters in Dakar and other regions.
The National Police revealed that some 500 demonstrators, including minors and foreigners, were arrested Thursday and Friday in several regions of the country, during the demonstrations which took place after the verdict of the Ousmane Sonko-Adji Sarr trial.
« Five hundred people were arrested during the demonstrations. Among them are minors and foreigners. These individuals were […] armed and dangerous,” said divisional commissioner Ibrahima Diop, director of public security.
