Africa-Press – Senegal. The Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday welcomed the « renewed recognition » of Senegal’s role and place by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
« The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad welcomes the recognition, again renewed, this Monday, June 19, 2023, in Geneva, by the United Nations High Commissioner, of the role and place of Senegal in human rights,” reports a press release sent to APS.
The document notably quotes the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights who spoke at the solemn opening of the 53 rd session of the Human Rights Council.
« Unlike many richer states, Senegal has ratified all the main human rights treaties and is also fully up to date with all obligations, » said Volker Türk in comments reported by the press release.
« Although I have recently noted concerns, it is important to recognize that this is a country with a long tradition of positive cooperation, » he added.
For the Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this position of the supreme body of the United Nations in charge of human rights confirms the attachment of the government of Senegal to this question in a spirit of transparency and collaboration.
It confirms « Senegal’s desire to consolidate its tradition of a country that respects human rights within the framework of international legality and national laws and regulations », comments Senegalese diplomacy.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights recently called for the opening of an independent investigation into the deaths of at least 16 people in recent violence in Senegal.
« The services of the High Commissioner have taken note of the decision of the Senegalese authorities to open investigations, but we ask them to ensure that these are rapid, independent and thorough », declared Seif Magango, a door -speech of the High Commissioner during a press conference organized in Geneva.
