Africa-Press – Senegal. The Senegalese club Casa Sports will face Burkina Faso’s Etoile filante in the CAF Confederation Cup this Sunday, which they find eleven years after their first participation in this competition in 2012.

The flag club of Ziguinchor (south) had been eliminated in the preliminary round by Gamtel by 4 shots to 3, after a draw (1-1), at the end of regulation time. For its second participation in this tournament, Casa Sports is hosting Etoile filante from Burkina Faso at the Lat Dior stadium in Thiès, this Sunday at 5 p.m. GMT.

Seydou Sané’s team has strengthened its squad with the signing of 15 new players for this tournament. The objective of the leaders is to reach the group stage.

The winner of the match will face Rivers United of Nigeria in the next round.

The Confederation Cup was born in 2004 from the merger of the African Cup Winners’ Cup and the CAF Cup (1992-2003).

AS Thiès, the first Senegalese team to participate in the Confederation Cup, stopped in the preliminary round. Jaraaf is the only Senegalese team to have reached the quarter-finals of the tournament in the 2021 edition, where it was beaten by Coton Sport du Cameroun (1-1.0-2).

In 1998, when the competition was still called the CAF Cup, Dakar’s Jeanne d’Arc made it to the final. The first Senegalese club to reach this stage, Joan of Arc had lost against the Sfaxien sports club of Tunisia (1-0, 0-3).

A total of 52 clubs representing 41 member associations will take part in the competition. USM Alger is the latest winner (2023) of the Confederation Cup.
