L'ARCADE draws a positive balance from its "economic Saturdays"

Africa-Press – Senegal. The African Research and Cooperation for the Support of Endogenous Development (ARCADE) rejoiced, Saturday, in Dakar, at the impact of its conferences « The Saturdays of the economy » on public policies in Africa.

« I think this celebration of the 10th anniversary of ‘Saturdays of the economy’ gives an idea of the impact that this forum has had in African political governance, » said the president of ARCADE, l Economist Demba Moussa Dembélé.

The impact of this series of conferences organized in Dakar can be measured by “the relevance of certain themes but, above all, by the quality of the speakers”, underlined Mr. Dembélé.

Gathered at the L’Harmattan bookstore in Dakar, the members of ARCADE celebrated the 10th anniversary of the « Samedis de l’économie », at the same time as they commemorated the death five years ago of the famous Franco-Egyptian economist Samir Amin (1931-2018). The Rosa-Luxembourg Foundation, which takes part in the organization of these conferences inaugurated in March 2013, took part in the meeting.

« Among the themes discussed during the previous panels, there is the deconstruction of the neoliberal discourse, development and democracy, the question of the CFA franc, the importance of research in development, the financing of education, the employment issue… » reminded Mr. Dembélé.

According to him, this cycle of conferences contributes to the “deconstruction of the neoliberal discourse on the development of Africa and […] of the capitalist system”.

These economic meetings also help to “promote, in Senegal and in Africa, alternative policies capable of initiating a real self-centered development of the continent”, added the president of ARCADE.

The economist Ndongo Samba Sylla, one of the presenters of these conferences, praised the intellectual dimension of Samir Amin, who died on August 12, 2018 at the age of 86.

“Professor Samir Amin was an intellectual of great stature,” said Mr. Sylla, researcher at the Rosa-Luxembourg foundation.
