Africa-Press – Senegal. The Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking on behalf of the government, said on Saturday that it was delighted with the admission of the African Union (AU) to the G20, the intergovernmental group made up of the European Union and 19 of the most developed countries in the world.

“The government of the Republic of Senegal welcomes the unanimous decision taken on September 9, 2023 by the G20 summit in New Delhi to admit the African Union as a full member of the group,” the ministry wrote in a press release. .

“Senegal extends its warm congratulations to […] Azali Assoumani, the president of the Union of the Comoros and current president of the African Union, and to all the leaders of the member countries of the Union (AU) for this success collective,” adds the ministerial department responsible for Senegalese diplomacy.

Le Sénégal tient à saluer et à remercier « vivement » les membres du G20 pour leur « soutien diligent, qui traduit leur esprit d’ouverture et de partenariat envers notre continent ».

“This historic decision of the G20 is the happy culmination of the advocacy” that the Senegalese President, Macky Sall, “made throughout his mandate at the head of the African Union for the admission of Africa to the G20” , underlined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This “advocacy […] translates its vision of fairer and more inclusive global political, economic and financial governance. The government warmly congratulates […] President Macky Sall for his decisive leadership on this issue which he initiated and supported,” adds the press release.

Le ministère rappelle que le dirigeant sénégalais « a assuré le suivi » de la demande d’adhésion de l’Afrique au G20, « conformément au mandat qui lui avait été confié par le […] sommet de l’Union africaine de février 2023 ».

The intergovernmental group made up of the European Union and 19 of the most developed countries in the world accepted the request made by the AU to become a member, declared Macky Sall on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

“The #G20 summit has just unanimously admitted the African Union as a member of the group. I warmly thank all the members of the G20 for their support for this initiative that I took during my mandate at the head of the [African Union] », wrote Mr. Sall, then addressing his congratulations to « all the Africa”.

L’adhésion de l’Union africaine au G20 était une préoccupation pour plusieurs dirigeants du continent.

Macky Sall en avait fait une priorité lorsqu’il exerçait les fonctions de président en exercice de l’UA en 2022.
