Le re\u0301sultat est un robot capable d\u2019arpenter les terrains les plus rugueux et complique\u0301s, inaccessibles aux engins a\u0300 roues ou a\u0300 pattes. De fait, EELS, c\u2019est son nom, n\u2019a ni roues, ni pattes articule\u0301es : comme son nom l\u2019indique, ce projet a tout du gros serpent. EELS est l\u2019acronyme d\u2019Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor mais signifie aussi \u201canguille\u201d, en anglais.<\/p>\n<p><b>Un robot-serpent teste\u0301 sur un sol imitant celui de la plane\u0300te Mars<\/b><\/p>\n<p>De\u0301veloppe\u0301 depuis 2019 par une e\u0301quipe du Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) de la Nasa, a\u0300 Pasadena (Etats-Unis), il a fait l\u2019objet de divers tests sur le terrain, dans la neige, sur une patinoire, sur un espace sableux du JPL imitant le sol de la plane\u0300te Mars (le Mars Yard). Les re\u0301sultats ont e\u0301te\u0301 pre\u0301sente\u0301s en mai 2023. En septembre, la machine ira se mouvoir sous la surface d\u2019un glacier canadien.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019engin est actuellement une structure cylindrique de quatre me\u0300tres de long divise\u0301e en dix tronc\u0327ons articule\u0301s. Strie\u0301 de rainures he\u0301licoi\u0308dales comme une vis sans fin, ce corps prend l\u2019allure d\u2019une foreuse pose\u0301e par terre. Sa rotation, au lieu de percer quoi que ce soit, lui fait agripper la surface du sol, ce qui a pour effet de le faire avancer. Le robot est modulaire. Les tronc\u0327ons peuvent en effet e\u0302tre e\u0301quipe\u0301s d\u2019un design de rainures diffe\u0301rent selon le terrain (sable, cailloux, glace&#8230;) et l\u2019inclinaison. \u201cNous sommes alle\u0301s jusqu\u2019a\u0300 une pente de 35 degre\u0301s, mais le robot est susceptible de s\u2019attaquer a\u0300 plus\u201d, estime le directeur du projet Matthew Robinson.<\/p>\n<p><b>Un robot qui calcule lui-me\u0302me sa trajectoire<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Surtout, il s\u2019agit d\u2019un robot autonome. Comme il est destine\u0301 a\u0300 explorer des zones complique\u0301es et lointaines, notamment dans l\u2019espace, ses concepteurs ont de\u0301cide\u0301 d\u2019e\u0301viter que son pilotage soit de\u0301pendant de communications sans fil. EELS est donc muni, comme un ve\u0301hicule sans conducteur, de came\u0301ras et de lidar qui lui permettent de cartographier en trois dimensions le terrain et les obstacles qui se pre\u0301sentent a\u0300 lui.<\/p>\n<p>A partir de ces donne\u0301es, il calcule lui-me\u0302me sa trajectoire, mais aussi se\u0301lectionne une technique particulie\u0300re de reptation et de mise en mouvement parmi toute une se\u0301rie qui a e\u0301te\u0301 mode\u0301lise\u0301e. Chacune est adapte\u0301e a\u0300 une situation donne\u0301e, que le robot sait reconnai\u0302tre. Selon les cas, il avancera en ligne droite, ou imitera le mouvement sinusoi\u0308dal du serpent, ou prendra la forme d\u2019un cercle ou d\u2019un croissant et progresser ainsi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLe fait qu\u2019il soit comple\u0300tement autonome ne veut pas dire qu\u2019il n\u2019y a aucune communication, pre\u0301vient ne\u0301anmoins Hiro Ono, chercheur en robotique mobile au JPL. EELS sera connecte\u0301 via un ca\u0302ble comprenant une fibre optique pour communiquer avec un engin spatial reste\u0301 en surface, lequel pourra envoyer des messages vers la Terre et en recevoir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>La prochaine e\u0301tape annonce\u0301e consistera a\u0300 installer des instruments sur le robot (en l\u2019occurrence des capteurs pour collecter des donne\u0301es sur la chimie et la physique des glaciers). Les responsables du projet ont par exemple en te\u0302te de tester un syste\u0300me d\u2019e\u0301lectrophore\u0300se capillaire. \u201cC\u2019est un instrument miniaturise\u0301 qui peut servir a\u0300 de\u0301tecter la salinite\u0301 d\u2019un liquide, explique Matthew Robinson.
